Here at Oz Baby Trends we supply a range of products made from bamboo – and Australian families love them!
There are a few very good
reasons why bamboo nappies (and accessories) are among the most popular modern cloth nappies on
the market.
For a start, they are soft, hyper-absorbent
and easy to care for. But bamboo has a lot more going for it.
Bamboo is naturally antibacterial: Studies in Japan have shown that
even after numerous washes, bamboo retains its antibacterial properties. In
fact, when scientists tried to grow bacteria on bamboo fabric, more than 70 per
cent of the bacteria failed to thrive.
Bamboo is very breathable: Although it’s able to absorb about 3
times its own weight in water (60 per cent more than cotton), bamboo allows
baby’s sensitive bums to breathe easily, meaning less nappy rash. A little hint
though – your bamboo nappies will need several washes before they reach their
maximum absorbency.
Bamboo is hypo-allergenic: If you have concerns about
sensitive or allergy-prone skin, bamboo is the perfect alternative to man-made
fibres, or even cotton.
Bamboo is better for the environment: Bamboo can grow up to one foot a day
– without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilisers. This makes it a
highly-sustainable resource. It also prevents soil erosion and absorbs more
carbon dioxide than trees can.
Bamboo needs minimum chemicals for
processing: Yes, the processing or raw bamboo
into material is not-completely chemical free but the only way to achieve this
is to go naked! It does, however, use fewer chemicals – and less toxic
chemicals than other textiles. The main chemical used is sodium hydroxide
(lye), which is used to make soap. In most cases, the factory that turns bamboo
into fabric reuses the sodium hydroxide so it does not pollute the waterways.
Bamboo is grown places where other
crops aren’t viable: So not
only is it better for the environment, it’s also a great cash crop in the
developing world. And it grows like grass, which means it can be cut without
being uprooted, and will regrown quickly, leading to a sustainable income for
producers worldwide.
Bamboo is 100 per cent biodegrable: Yes, you heard right – 100 per
cent. You can’t get any better than that.
What's not to love, right?
